The name Managua comes from the Nahuatl "managuac" and means "Surrounded by Ponds"; or also known as "The Bride of Xolotlán", Managua was elevated to a city in 1846, and became the capital of the Republic of Nicaragua in 1852. In Managua you can visit the old cathedral, the metropolitan cathedral, Loma de Tiscapa, Isla del Amor, Lake Xolotlan and the Malecon of the city.
